Alamma Uthup was born on December 8, 1935, to the Edayanjily family as the third child of E.K Kuruvilla and Achamma Kuruvilla in Mallooserry, Kottayam. She had 4 siblings with whom she maintained a loving relationship throughout her life. Alamma completed her education at St. Anne's School.
At the age of 17, she married M. P. Uthup, who was a teacher at Sacred Heart. Together, they created a beautiful family consisting of 6 children, 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren to continue their legacy for years to come. It was during this time when Alamma became affectionately known as "Alammachi" by their family. Ammachi had the opportunity to immigrate to America in 1983, where her life became an embodiment of love now extending beyond her husband and children to her grandchildren. She dedicated decades of her life tirelessly caring for her ten grandchildren throughout all stages of their life leading up to adulthood, carefully allocating her time among six households throughout Northern California.
Ammachi's love and devotion for her family was matched by her dedication to service and philanthropy. She was a devout Catholic and steadfast believer in St. Antony. She has great compassion for various underprivileged populations of India and financially sponsored the nursing education and wedding celebrations of many abroad.
Ammachi found significance in simplicity and wanted nothing beyond being surrounded by her beloved family, and that is exactly how she spent her 88 years. She passed peacefully on the morning of May 13, 2024, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Ammachi will always be remembered as a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who lived a life illuminated by joy and laughter. Her quick wit, charming humor, and dedication to her loved ones will be deeply missed and forever cherished by those who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
